<image:caption>Santnerpass Hut Built in 1956 at an altitude of 2,734 meters, this spectacular destination underwent a complete reconstruction in 2022 and reopened its doors in 2023. The result is breathtaking - both the hut's architectural design and the sweeping views will leave you speechles. The fact that you have to work hard and earn your way up only makes reaching it feel all the more magical. To top it off, the family who runs the hut is easily the kindest and most welcoming host you could ask for.</image:caption>

Stepping inside offers a true glimpse into the traditional alpine spirit, complete with charming original touches and classic interior details. Right nearby lies the mesmerizing Antermoia Lake, named after the beautiful nymph who, according to local Ladin legends, once inhabited these waters beneath the Rosengarten massif. It is one of the larger huts, built in a classically charming, historic style that exudes timeless alpine character. Its grand presence and panoramic position make it a great stop along any trek through the Dolomites. If you’re up for an early start, a tip is to ask the hut for a pre-packed breakfast so you can hit the trail just before sunrise. That way, you get to watch the sun come up, enjoy your breakfast out in nature, and most likely have the tracks all to yourself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mena House Address: 6 Pyramids Road, Giza No first visit to Cairo is complete without seeing the pyramids. The experience can easily become hot, hectic and overwhelmingly touristy, so my best advice is to stay at the historic Mena House, which opened in 1883 and sits directly opposite the Great Pyramid of Giza. Book a room overlooking the pyramid. Waking up to that view is almost impossible to describe. Mena House is now operated by Marriott and has, unfortunately, lost some of its former charm. Even so, its location and views remain unlike anything else you are likely to experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Le Riad, Islamic Cairo Address: 114 El Moez Street, Gamaleya district, opposite Beit El Sehemy Enter Islamic Cairo through the historic Bab Zuweila gate and allow yourself to get lost in the surrounding streets. Amid the clanging of coppersmiths, tiny bookshops, rows of bathroom fittings, barbers and butcher shops, you will encounter the warmth of traditional Arab hospitality and the genuine kindness of Cairo’s residents. In the heart of Al-Muizz Street stands my favourite hotel, Le Riad. It is a small boutique hotel with an abundance of character and a rooftop restaurant, Zeeyara, which is one of my favourite places to eat in the city. Do not expect a peaceful night’s sleep, Cairo is rarely quiet, but the hotel more than makes up for it with charm, atmosphere and wonderful views. Have breakfast on the rooftop while the city slowly comes to life below you.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - AN ART HISTORIAN’S CASE FOR CAIRO - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The Egyptian Museum Address: North side of Tahrir Square, Downtown Cairo The old Egyptian Museum is my favourite museum in the world. Its collection contains more than 170,000 objects spanning roughly 5,000 years of Egyptian history, from prehistoric times to the Late Period. The building itself is painted in faded pink on the outside and in shades of pistachio green and deep reddish brown on the inside, with beautiful old wooden display cases filled with strange, wonderful treasures. I can spend hours wandering through its rooms, discovering new stories and taking in the beauty of its dust, disorder and gentle decay. Although many major pieces have been transferred to the new Grand Egyptian Museum, including some of the treasures associated with Tutankhamun, the old museum should not be compared with its new and highly polished counterpart. They offer entirely different experiences. Among my favourite objects are the collections of glass eyes, ancient slippers, beauty tools and small animal figurines used in burial rituals. Keep an eye out for sculptures and figures of Anubis, the ancient Egyptian jackal-headed god associated with death and the afterlife. According to Egyptian mythology, Anubis guided souls into the next world and oversaw the weighing of the heart against a feather. A heart found to be heavier than the feather was devoured by Ammit, a terrifying creature with the head of a crocodile, the body of a lion and the hindquarters of a hippopotamus.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Gayer-Anderson Museum Address: Ahmed Ibn Tulun Street, off Abd al-Magid al-Labban Street Perched above the city beside the Mosque of Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Gayer-Anderson Museum is one of Cairo’s most atmospheric places. The house was once the home of Gayer-Anderson, an eccentric and charming Irishman who first arrived in Egypt as a doctor with the British Army. He later served in the Egyptian Army, eventually rising to the rank of major. After retiring in 1924, he lived on a houseboat on the Nile and devoted himself to collecting antiques. The museum consists of two historic houses dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Together, they form one of the finest surviving examples of a traditional Cairene residence. Gayer-Anderson took over the property in 1935, carefully restoring the buildings and filling them with an extraordinary collection of art, furniture and antiquities. Some of his finest pieces eventually made their way to England, including objects now held by the British Museum. When illness forced him to leave Egypt in 1942, he donated the house and its contents to the Egyptian people. King Farouk later honoured him with the title of Pasha, which he retained until his death in 1945. The house is surrounded by legends, none of them dull. My favourite concerns its supposedly magical well. According to the story, lovers who gaze into the water will see the face of their beloved instead of their own reflection. The rooftop terrace appeared in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. From the terrace, there are magnificent views of the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, one of the oldest mosques in Egypt. Built between 876 and 879, it is one of Cairo’s most beautiful and impressive historic buildings.</image:caption>

And when I say everyone came here, I mean everyone: intellectuals, journalists, politicians and people quietly planning revolutions. Portraits of many of the café’s former regulars still hang on the walls, preserving the memory of its celebrated past. Today, however, the place feels as though it is living on borrowed time. Cairo is changing, and Café Riche is changing with it. Go for a cup of peppermint tea and allow yourself to soak up the history, but stay away from the food.</image:caption>

<image:caption>6901 Address: 5 Hussein Pasha El Memary Street, Marouf, Qasr El Nil, Downtown Cairo Tucked away in downtown Cairo, 6901 is a relaxed combination of restaurant, boutique and record shop and one of my favourite places to spend an afternoon. The menu offers a contemporary take on Egyptian street food, accompanied by freshly pressed juices and properly made espresso. The space has undergone a remarkable transformation. What was once a dark and neglected room occupied by the neighbourhood makwagy, a traditional clothes presser, has become a creative meeting place where food, fashion and music come together. Alongside Egyptian dishes made with bread sourced from a nearby bakery, you will find vinyl records and a carefully curated selection of clothing for both men and women.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Saraya Gallery Address: Saraya Gallery, Cairo Marriott Hotel, 16 Saray El Gezira Street, Zamalek, Cairo 11211, Egypt. At the restaurant The Saraya Gallery, you dine in one of Cairo's most historic buildings. Hidden within the Cairo Marriott Hotel in Zamalek, the restaurant occupies part of the former Gezirah Palace, created by Khedive Ismail for the celebrations marking the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Designed with French grandeur in mind, the palace welcomed Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie as honoured guests. Today, the restaurant blends its heritage with timeless elegance. Rich fabrics, Oriental lanterns and polished marble create an intimate setting. For an extra touch of the past, choose a table near the portraits of the imperial couple and enjoy an evening surrounded by echoes of Egypt's royal era - it’s a bit over the top and very charming. Every now and then it's nice to try something different, and the Saraya Gallery is a nice place to visit if you’ve had your fair share of Egyptian food. The drinks are also 10/10.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Khan el-Khalili Much of Khan el-Khalili is filled with tourist traps and mass-produced souvenirs, but hidden among its narrow alleys are still a few original and remarkable shops. One of them is the beautiful old silver shop Zaki Boutros & Fouad Silver. It is the kind of place where you find anything your heart desires. Displayed inside is even a old thank-you note from Prince Henrik of Denmark, praising the shopkeeper for his excellent service and the quality of his work. The area is also home to several wonderful antique shops. They are easy to miss, often concealed behind dusty windows and unassuming façades, so look carefully as you wander through the streets. For a simple and beautiful souvenir, visit one of Khan el-Khalili’s traditional glass shops. The colourful pieces are locally made and surprisingly affordable, with everything from drinking glasses and water pitchers to delicate camel-shaped Christmas ornaments.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - AN ART HISTORIAN’S CASE FOR CAIRO - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I always recommend bringing a good book to accompany the journey. These are some of my favourite reads for a trip to Egypt. Konstantinos Cavafy – The City (and Selected Poems) The Greek-Egyptian poet Konstantinos Cavafy's The City is one of my favourite poems of all time. I always bring a collection of his poetry when I travel to Cairo, it captures the spirit of the city like no other. You said: “I’ll go to another country, go to another shore, find another city better than this one. Whatever I try to do is fated to turn out wrong and my heart lies buried like something dead. How long can I let my mind moulder in this place? Wherever I turn, wherever I look, I see the black ruins of my life, here, where I’ve spent so many years, wasted them, destroyed them totally.” You won’t find a new country, won’t find another shore. This city will always pursue you. You’ll walk the same streets, grow old in the same neighborhoods, turn gray in these same houses. You’ll always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere: there’s no ship for you, there’s no road. Now that you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner, you’ve destroyed it everywhere in the world. The City, 1910 by C.P. CAVAFY Translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard Michael Ondaatje – The English Patient One of my all-time favourite novels. Set against the vast landscapes of Egypt and the Libyan Desert, it is an unforgettable story of love, memory, and loss, inspired in part by the real-life explorer Count László Almásy. Alaa Al Aswany – The Republic of False Truths (I Ran to the Nile) A powerful novel about the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, told through the lives of ordinary people in Tahrir Square. I recommend Al Aswany's work to anyone wanting to better understand contemporary Egypt and its complex political history. Thorkild Hansen – Arabia Felix A gripping account of the ill-fated Danish expedition to Arabia in the 18th century. Following the explorers through Turkey, Egypt, and Yemen, Hansen transforms a remarkable historical expedition into a compelling tale of ambition, endurance, and human frailty. Blending meticulous research with beautiful prose, Arabia Felix is as much an adventure story as it is a meditation on the price of exploration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Innocenti, Rome Stefania, the third generation owner, told us her grandfather started the bakery in 1940, and a photo of her mother standing proudly by the oven (I’ve never seen anything like it) looks out across the room. Stepping through the plastic tasselled curtain, I was hit with nostalgia, and the hug of hot, biscuit-scented air. With so much to see, lessons in good graphics at every turn, it felt like a scene from a mid-century fairytale. Or at least, the dreamscapes that exist in my mind, where every sense is overloaded, the stories are endless, and no decoration is too much. I love the old confectionary packaging on display, and the framed photos of children inside the bakery from a Miss Sixty campaign.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Au Petit Bar, Paris Family-owned since 1966, and tucked away in the 1e arrondissement, one late afternoon we enjoyed a couple of cold cuts for refreshment as the kitchen was closed. We were the only ones in there enjoying its soft silence and Michel’s sweet service. So many details to notice and admire too, from the cellar staircase hidden inside the bar to the worn out curve of the wooden chopping board. Also, the peanut machine!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chez Etienne, Marseille Four years ago, I tried Etienne’s famous Marseille style moitié-moitié - half cheese, half anchovy - pizza on a bench nearby. Last summer, I dined in and ordered from the rest of the menu: cold and olive garnished anchovies set the scene and Provence style squid comes sticky and garlic slicked. The apple pie comes from a local patisserie and gets given the wood fired treatment before an all important boule of vanilla ice cream lands on top. The branded paper napkins are way thicker than they need to be, but make the whole experience bolder, and better, especially if you’re a spiller like me. Pascal, the third generation owner, and his fellow front of house have been bringing familial energy to the space for decades. The pictures on the wall kept us occupied the entire time, and Matt Damon also seems to be a fan. There are so many things on the menu I’m yet to try (parmigiana, steak, lamb, potatoes, flan) but next time I’ll be sure to dine in more company.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Guarantee, Athens This is how you do a sandwich shop. I wish I had a version of Guarantee by my house in London, or maybe one day I'll build my own. It's run by a couple of friendly generations of Maniots (from Mani in the Peloponnese) and sits on a shady corner of the lively Koukaki neighbourhood. It operates a giant menu, with countless combinations to choose from, though I prefer a DIY situation, and always build my own. First, you choose your bread from the glass cabinet, and then you start loading in all your toppings. Rumour has it, a young graphic designer got involved to upgrade their branding, and they now have very pleasing sandwich paper and bags, as well as branded magnets, for those who enjoy restaurant memorabilia.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hurricane, Nicosia There are three old school bakeries – each one a time capsule – in the historic centre of Nicosia that I adore, but Hurricane is the oldest, continuously in operation since 1942. I'm pretty sure their yellow fridge, which sits proudly behind the counter, dates back to around then too. Walking along its narrow street, you could almost miss Hurricane, if not for the excellent signage out the front. It's very close to the Green Line, and was named Hurricane after the World War II fighter jet, and called itself a tea room as it originally catered to British officers during the colonial rule of Cyprus. It doesn't however cater to British palates, and it is instead famed for its strong coffee and traditional Cypriot pies and sweets: rustic and unrefined. There is little innovation here, and the furniture and frames continue to tell us so many tales.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Aux Deux Amis - For me this has been part of my Paris experience from like day one. Back in 2012, when I was new in the city and living the life of a student with no worries about the future, I found myself walking down my street (I lived higher up on the same street back then) and into this exact bar that my friend had recommend. Apparently the cool Parisian girl she was living with raved about it, saying it was the new hot spot in town. Right now, Yuto Fujimoto is the head chef there and is creating one stunning menu after the other.</image:caption>

<image:caption>L’escale - If there’s a place to be on a Friday evening, this is probably it. Back when I was studying I would cross the bridge and grab a coffee here just because of of its ideal geographical location ( I could skip the annoying swap with the metro, get off early and walk across Pont de la Tournelle). Back then it was only the locals and old people going there, it had its charm and it still does. The menu is stunning, seasonal and fresh, service is very French and in the evening their outside seating on the bridge fills up with Parisians enjoying the view of the sun setting behind Notre Dame.</image:caption>

The goal is to transform it into a place for hospitality and culture, while keeping the character of the house intact. Very little has changed over the years, and everywhere you look there are traces of the people who lived there before, old photographs, souvenirs, handwritten notes, and everyday objects collected over generations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Now with two locations in the city, Origo is my favorite place to get breakfast. They have really good sandwiches and buns, but my favorite is their pain au chocolat, made with dark Venezuelan chocolate. It’s clearly not only my favorite but everyone else’s too, because most days they’ve run out by the afternoon.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, I used to live next to it and went very often. It’s a quick visit and close to Fundació Miró, another place I love. It’s a treat for the senses, with the water, the different kinds of marble, and all the glass and steel. It’susually pretty quiet, and the bookstore is new, but filled with gems.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>What I miss the most when I’m far from home for a few days is the food. Bar Bocata serves traditional Catalan and Spanish dishes, well done and beautifully served. I often go with friends and order things to share, but when I go back by myself, I always order the same: one Gilda, the seasoned tomato, and one tapa of truita de patates. For dessert, the bread, chocolate, olive oil, and salt is a Catalan classic.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>A recent addition to the Barcelona landscape is the Paloma Wool store, the store itself is a beautiful experience, even if you’re not there to shop. The brand has become very popular in the last few years, so it feels special to be able to see the pieces in person, touch the fabrics, and experience the world around them up close. It’s the kind of store I like taking my time in, and it’s lovely to see with friends.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An art gallery that exhibits modern and contemporary works by different artists, Galeria Mayoral is somewhere you will probably stumble upon if you’re walking around the city center. The door is usually open for visits, and they currently have an impressive selection of paintings and ceramics by Miró and Picasso.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>LLIBRERIA FINESTRES, My favorite bookstore in Barcelona. You can’t take pictures inside, which is why the only picture I have is of this book on Patti Smith, but it’s one of my favorite places to spend a free afternoon. They have a gorgeous little patio inside, where you can grab a coffee and sit with your new purchase. On the opposite sidewalk, they have another store with art, photography, and fashion books. Some of my favorite coffee table books I’ve bought here.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Les Filles serves great healthy Mediterranean food, with a gorgeous terrace/patio to enjoy your meal in. It’s a great choice for when you want something healthy but still very flavorful, their dishes always surprise me. It’s also great for a morning or afternoon coffee with a friend. For lunch or dinner, especially if you want to sit on the terrace, I would recommend making a reservation.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>More than a hundred years old, this is a Barcelona classic. Gèneres de Punt La Torre sells lingerie and pajamas for all ages, and carries the T-shirt brands our moms used to buy for us when we were little. They now also have some of the basics from Oscalito, one of my favorite brands for silk and wool underwear and basic, fitted, warm T-shirts.</image:caption>

<image:title>WHERE - A LOCALS BARCELONA - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>My go-to for a romantic dinner. Clara’s interior is beautiful, and they serve Catalan and Spanish classics, but always with a twist. They use beautiful ingredients and combine them in ways that feel inventive without being overcomplicated. Anything with tomato or fish is usually what I end up loving most, and their wine selection is also great.</image:caption>
